What home insurance covers
- Fire, lightning and explosion
- Earthquake, depending on the programme
- Flood, storm and other natural perils, depending on the programme
- Theft and burglary of contents
- Burst pipes and water damage
- Glass breakage
- Owner’s or tenant’s liability to third parties, for example if a leak damages the flat below
Building, contents or both
You can insure the building (walls, floors, installations), the contents (furniture, appliances, personal items) or both. Owners usually insure the building, while tenants insure their contents and their liability.
If you have a mortgage, the bank usually asks for the property to be insured against fire and earthquake. We can recommend a programme that meets the bank’s requirements and also covers your contents and liability.
What affects the price
- The rebuild value of the property and the value of the contents
- The area, the floor and the use (main home, holiday house, rental)
- The age and construction of the building
- Security measures such as an alarm and a security door
- The covers you choose, especially earthquake
Tips
- Insure the property for its rebuild value, not its market value.
- Declare the size, use and valuable items correctly.
- Check what applies to earthquake and flood: they often need to be added separately.
- For jewellery, art and collections, see valuables insurance.
Covers, limits and exclusions are always defined by the terms of the insurer’s policy.
