What car insurance covers
- Third-party liability, the compulsory cover for injury and damage you cause to others
- Roadside assistance and towing after a breakdown or accident
- Total or partial theft, and fire
- Glass breakage
- Natural perils such as hail, flood and earthquake, depending on the programme
- Own damage (comprehensive), for damage to your own car even when you are at fault
- Legal protection and driver cover, depending on the programme
Compulsory or comprehensive?
Third-party liability insurance is compulsory in Greece for every vehicle that is driven or parked on a public road, unless its plates have been surrendered. It covers the damage you cause to others, but not damage to your own car.
For a new or valuable car, or a car on finance or leasing, it is worth considering extra cover such as theft, natural perils or comprehensive insurance. For an older car, third-party liability with roadside assistance and glass cover is often enough.
What affects the price
The price of car insurance is not the same for everyone. It mainly depends on:
- The type, engine size, age and value of the car
- The driver’s age and experience, and claims history (Bonus–Malus)
- The postcode where the car is driven and parked
- The covers you choose and the excess (the amount you pay on each claim)
- The policy term (six months or one year)
Tips before you insure
- Compare the cover, not only the price: two policies with the same price can cover very different things.
- Check the excess and who is allowed to drive the car.
- Read what roadside assistance includes: towing distance, travel abroad, replacement car.
- For classic or high-value cars, ask for an agreed value.
Covers, limits and exclusions are always defined by the terms of the insurer’s policy.
